Execution of Navid Afkari, a Blatant Crime of the Islamic Republic!

۲۴ شهريور ۱۳۹۹

Navid was not an unknown figure like many other detainees of the August 2018 nationwide protests, but a conscious choice by the IR's repressive apparatus to say that even an international reputation would not prevent the killing of protesters, and that street killings would not suffice but will be complemented by mass detentions, mass torture, insults and confessions and executions.

Execution of Navid Afkari, a Blatant Crime of the Islamic Republic!

This morning, with the execution of Navid Afkari, the killing machine of the Islamic Republic (IR) took another victim. Regime’s executioners took Navid and his two brothers to an unknown location a few days ago, and despite protests from world-renowned athletes such as the world wrestling legend Medvedev, the head of the International Olympic Committee, human rights groups, families of those executed and lawyers' warnings that the case was flawed, Navid was executed this morning. Although in recent days there has been a wave of petitions to stop the death sentence of Navid in Iran and around the world, the IR's murderous apparatus carried out its criminal decision despite all the petitions.

Navid Afkari fell victim to the IR's record-making machine for protesters and opponents of the regime. The repetitive scenario of torturing people, forcing them to make false confessions in violation of all moral principles, along with threatening the family, torturing and harassing relatives, breaking down emotional and human boundaries, and punishing and retaliating to the point of death were implemented in this case. The Supreme Leader's servile and appointed judiciary system has once again demonstrated its duty to endorse and complete the blatant intrusion of the regime's repressive machine into the privacy of innocent citizens and to issue harsh sentences against them.

The execution of Navid, given the nature of his case, is a political decision at the highest level of the IR regime, and its message is a clear threat against dissatisfied, critical and opposition people that anti-regime protests will not be tolerated. With the execution of this athlete, a well-known sportsman with a championship medal and a popular and favorite of the youth of his hometown, the IR sent a message that the regime's decision is to continue the bloodshed and killing.

In the IR, the cries of victims of repression and torture are never heard. This regime has always used the death penalty to eliminate dissidents and to create an atmosphere of terror in the society. The foundations of this regime are based on killing and imprisonment and the issuance of death sentences against the citizens of the country is one of its main tools for maintaining its rule.

The Left Party of Iran (People’s Fadaian) considers the execution of Navid Afkari a blatant crime by the IR and strongly condemns it, and extends its sincere condolences to the Afkari family and the Iranian sports community and to all those who raised the banner of litigation against the tyrants. The issuance of death sentences against the protesters of the popular uprisings of December 2017 and November 2019 and the subsequent protests is part of the IR's plan to intimidate the people in the current difficult situation. We call on human rights organizations and institutions to protest against Navid’s execution, torture in the prisons of the IR and the issuance of harsh sentences against protesters and civil activists. We believe that without a collective struggle and full-scale pressure against the IR, detainees of the protests of 2017 and 2019 will not be released, harassment of the families of the victims and the repression will not end and the death sentences against the protesters will not be abolished. Success in this field is possible only by fomenting a full-scale and united struggle.
