The Trial of Hamid Nouri, the First Trial of the Perpetrators of the 1988 Massacre

The trial of Hamid Nouri, known as Abbasi, has begun. Hamid Nouri, assistant to the deputy prosecutor of Evin and Gohardasht prisons, was arrested on November 9, 2019, at Stockholm Airport, Sweden, on charges of complicity in the killing of prisoners. He has been held in custody since then. He has attended 17 hearings on his case. The trial of Hamid Nouri began yesterday, presided over by Judge Thomas Zander. His indictment was prepared and filed by the prosecutor of the case, Ms. Carlson. The case, which has 110 plaintiffs and 50 witnesses, is scheduled to end in April 2022 after 89 hearings.

During this time, the families of the victims, former political prisoners, and civil and political activists have made valuable efforts to gather documentary evidence and find evidence, which has led to the formation of a court that has today indicted Hamid Nouri. So far, trials have been held in Germany, Belgium and France to try the terrorists of the Islamic Republic for assassinating dissidents. But this is the first trial to try one of the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre. The Swedish court is, in a sense, the beginning of the trial of the leaders of the Islamic Republic who ordered the killings and assassinations. And it is a warning to all murderers to know that the world has become too small to escape justice.

The trial has so far proceeded without the influence of the powers. The active presence of Iranians in court and in front of it during the trial and in support of its continuation will further reflect the court's resonance and make it more difficult for powers to intervene behind the scenes. Ahmad Reza Jalali, an Iranian-Swedish citizen, is currently being held hostage by the Islamic Republic, and the Iranian regime is using him as a hostage to deal with the Swedish government. At the same time, the Iranian regime has done its best to prevent the trial of Hamid Nouri by threatening, conspiring, and bribing throughout the hearing process. The Iranian regime is well aware that the success of the justice movement in the trial of Hamid Nouri strengthens the morale of the people and the families of the victims and creates fear in the hearts of the repressive apparatus and the perpetrators of the killings. Especially, at this time when the regime is facing widespread protests from various social groups. This success could expand the struggle against the ruling tyranny. Therefore, this regime is ready to make any concessions and launch any conspiracy to strengthen morale of the oppressors and to disrupt the process of the trial.

The Left Party of Iran (People’s Fadaian) supports the fair trial of Hamid Nouri, one of the perpetrators of the killings in the prisons of the Islamic Republic, in a Swedish court and calls on party members and friends to cooperate with the Swedish judiciary throughout the trial. It is important that the opposition forces of the Islamic Republic, which believe in a fair trial, assist the fair trial in a unified and coordinated manner during this trial. We draw the Swedish government's attention to the conspiracies and stonewalling of the Islamic Republic, and warn that in the past, the Islamic Republic regime tried to stonewall the democratic process in the trials that took place in Germany, France, and Austria. We expect the Swedish judiciary, which is known for its independence in view and action, to achieve a fair trial until the sentencing of Hamid Nouri and to expose the role of the authorities of the Islamic Republic, including the newly sworn in president, Ibrahim Raisi. It is important to Shed Light on the dark parts of the 1988 Massacre.
