According to published reports, at least 1,500 people have been killed and more than 2,000 injured in an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale in southeastern Afghanistan on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a UN official said about 2,000 homes were probably destroyed by the quake, which could put the number of people still under rubble and the number of quake victims far higher than expected.
Afghan government aid workers say, due to difficult access to many mountain villages, rain, floods, landslides, and a lack of equipment, rescue operations have become more complicated. Lack of necessary equipment, including medicine and medical aid, has added to the problems and suffering of the people and the injured. Most of the aid promised by the international organizations and some governments has not yet reached the region, and the Taliban government is unable to meet the urgent needs of the people in these areas.
Now, in addition to the resumption of hostilities in this or that part of the country, the scale of the tragedy that has occurred with the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan has been compounded by the earthquake. After decades of war and violence, a nation still deprived of freedom, security and living in peace, comfort, and under the control of a dark regime, the earthquake has added to its suffering.
The Left Party of Iran (People’s Fadaian) expresses its sympathy and solidarity with the survivors of the earthquake victims in the neighboring country of Afghanistan and calls on all our dear compatriots to hurry to help the people of Afghanistan and be diligent in helping the earthquake victims in any way possible, wherever they are, by sending the necessary equipment and financial aid through earthquake relief centers. We express our deep sorrow and grief over the tragedy that has befallen the suffering people of Afghanistan and offer our condolences to the survivors of the earthquake.
