A Letter to:Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy

December 15, 2020

Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy

We became informed of your apropos action for holding the joint meeting of JCPOA on December 16, 2020. The meeting is scheduled to discuss ways to maintain order, effective implementation of the obligations of all parties and continuation of meetings at the ministerial level. In addition, this is the first meeting of the Joint Commission since Mr. Biden was announced as the president elect of the United States. Mr. Biden has announced the United States’ readiness to return to the JCPOA. Therefore, we, as one of the secular and democratic opposition forces in Iran, consider this meeting as an opening for the predominance of diplomacy to resolve issues related to the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. We would like to inform you and the participants of the summit:

  • We welcome the meeting of the JCPOA parties on ways to maintain order, effective implementation of the obligations of all parties and continuation of meetings at the ministerial level.
  • We praise Mr. Biden's readiness to return the United States to the JCPOA. We ask for the obligations of all parties to engage diplomatically in resolving the dispute.
  • Although the Islamic Republic has spared no effort to violate human rights and execution, imprisonment and torture of human rights activists and opponents of the regime continue, we welcome the resumption of negotiations and believe that any action to bring the Islamic Republic to the negotiating table toward improving Iran's relations with other countries will help to bring peace and detente to the region. In this regard, we consider the lifting of many of the Trump administration's sanctions against Iran and the appropriate return of Iran to its obligations in the JCPOA framework as appropriate measures to express goodwill and build mutual trust.
  • Although we oppose the regional policy of the Islamic Republic and support efforts to reach an understanding on regional security with the participation of the parties directly involved, but at the same time, we believe that trying to expand the framework of negotiations around JCPOA to include the aforementioned issues will not be constructive.

Mr. Borrell,

We hope for great success in your efforts for the rule of diplomacy over the relations of nations in resolving disputes.

With Sincere Greetings

Mehdi Ebrahimzadeh
