On Friday, August 12, the bloody attack on Salman Rushdie shocked and saddened the world. Salman Rushdie was seriously injured in this attack. According to the news, he lost one of his eyes. This attack, as an attack on the freedom of expression, faced a wide reaction and was condemned in the world. But most of the regime-affiliated media happily defended the execution of Khomeini's brutal and medieval fatwa (decree) and praised the assailant. Iran newspaper, the official newspaper of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in an article entitled "the definite fate of organized sacrilege" went further and commended the attack on Salman Rushdie as "humility, zeal and Islamic spirit to religious beliefs and commandments".
Khomeini issued the sentence to kill Rushdie, the author of the novel " Satanic Verses" in February 1989, and Ali Khamenei declared it irrevocable in 2004. Before issuing the death sentence of Salman Rushdie, Khomeini had issued the death sentence of thousands of political activists in prisons in another fatwa (decree), and the official assassins of the Islamic Republic carried it out. In relation to Salman Rushdie, various foundations affiliated with the Velayat-e-Faqih (guardianship of an Islamic jurist) system have set several million dollars as a reward for the execution of the sentence. Only the Khordad 15th Foundation has set a reward of three million and two hundred thousand dollars for the murder of this writer. Even the publishers of the Satanic Verses book and the bookstores that offered it were not spared from the attack. Now the same people who defended the fatwa (decree) of murder are sitting at the head of the corrupt regime of the Islamic Republic.
Today's assassination of Salman Rushdie is the continuation of execution of political opponents and slaughtering and suffocation of writers in Iran. Hundreds of writers, poets, translators, journalists, and political and civil activists have been executed in the Islamic Republic or have been killed by the regime assassins. Saeed Sultanpour, Hossein Sadraei (Eghdami), Ali Akbar Saeedi Sirjani, Ghafar Hosseini, Ahmad Tafazoli, Ebrahim Zalzadeh, Ahmed Miralaei, Hamid Hajizadeh (with his ten-year-old son), Pirouz Devani, Majid Sharif, Parvaneh and Dariush Forohar, Mohammad Mokhtari, Mohammad Jafar Pouyandeh, Shapour Bakhtiar, Abdurrahman Ghasemlou, Sadegh Sharafkandi, Fereydoun Farrokhzad,... are among the victims.
Now, the criminal act of "Hadi Matar", a 24-year-old man born in the state of California, USA, has exposed the dangerous reality of bigotry and fundamentalism that prevails in the name of religion in our country and in many parts of the world. In the dictionary of this medieval view, freedom of expression and having a different opinion is a crime and the dissident is "Mahdur al-Dam" (one whose blood may be shed with immunity). For this reason, it hires mercenaries, exports terrorists to kill dissidents, writers and political and civil activists, and tries to release its killers from prisons by taking citizens of other countries hostage. Unfortunately, such a regime has ruled over the fate of the people of our country for more than four decades and is still issuing death to all corners of the world.
The Left Party of Iran (People’s Fadaian) condemns the brutal attack on Salman Rushdie and wishes for his speedy recovery. Our party considers all those who justified Khomeini's fatwa (decree) as complicit in this criminal act. Freedom of opinion and expression is an inviolable right. We consider murder and acts of violence against freedom of speech, opposition thought and critic unacceptable and the murderous regime of the Islamic Republic and its corrupt leaders responsible for such criminal actions.
