Election of Mojtaba Khamenei: Continuation of Repression at Home and War and Crisis Abroad!

Election of Mojtaba Khamenei: Continuation of Repression at Home and War and Crisis Abroad!

Monday, March 16, 2026

By electing Mojtaba Khamenei as the leader of the Islamic Republic, the regime’s repressive apparatus showed that it continues to have the first say in all matters and plays the main role in shaping the leadership of the Islamic Republic, and it brought to this position a person who has not yet made any apparent achievements, has not even given a public speech, and does not enjoy a position among the official regime’s clergy, and his only characteristic is a special relationship with the commanders of the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its plundering and corrupt officials in the circle of his father’s office. They have also raised him and brought him to the position of leader by threatening and courting the clergy members of the Assembly of Experts. A message that has been published in his name also indicates his current status. No report has been published on how he was elected, nor has a word or image of him been broadcast. Several days after the announcement of the “election”, with the publication of a message, the usual bragging and exaggerations of the regime’s corrupt generals have been published this time from his words, threatening revenge, closing the Strait of Hormuz, warning neighbors, encouraging proxy forces, demanding compensation, the possibility of opening new fronts, etc.

The election of Mojtaba Khamenei could also be an attempt to declare the regime’s internal cohesion and convey the message that the “previous” path continues. This election also carries the meaning that even if a political compromise is to be made, this will be possible within the framework of the continuity of the Islamic Republic and with its current holders of power.

The quick election of Mojtaba Khamenei was, of course, not unexpected. This also happened with the election of Ali Khamenei. At the time, Khamenei himself did not believe that he was going to become the leader. Hashemi Rafsanjani and the experts of the time, violating the regime’s own legal rules, declared Ali Khamenei the second Supreme Leader. This time, the same game has been repeated in a different form. Someone has been elected to this position who has no standing among the clergy and has not even been seen in a group other than the special circle of the narrow circle of power of the "Khamenei’s office". Mehdi Karroubi first pointed out his interference in the election in the 2005 presidential election, and after that, some forces warned about the efforts of Ali Khamenei's office to make the leadership hereditary. The same game has been implemented today. But the star of good fortune of Mojtaba Khamenei's leadership could decline before it is unveiled. The reign of Mujtaba Khamenei began at a time when Iran is still struggling with the current problems, including the war that the policies of the Islamic Republic played a significant role in its creation. The economic crisis and the destruction of political and social structures have intensified, and the country needs fundamental changes in all areas, from domestic to foreign, and above all, the transition from the Islamic Republic to handing over the authority to manage affairs to the free choice of the people.

The Left Party of Iran considers the struggle of power groups within the regime to carve out a leader and threaten the people with further repression in the current war atmosphere to be a show that is already doomed to failure. With the slogan “No to war, no to the Islamic Republic, fight for freedom,” we call on everyone to unite and cooperate to overcome the current difficult days. Let us try to turn this solidarity and cooperation in today’s difficult circumstances into a step towards building a free and just tomorrow in our country. Let us stand united and in harmony against the American and Israeli attacks on the structures and systems of our homeland, as well as against the oppressive ruling regime, and pave the way for liberation from the war and calamity of the Islamic Republic and its overthrow. Today, more than ever, our country needs the national unity and solidarity of all people to end the life of the Islamic Republic at the hands of the people.

Real change in Iran is possible not through war and the intervention of foreign powers, but from within Iranian society and through broad political and social movements. Social movements with the participation of different strata and classes against tyranny and for freedom, justice, and the ruling of the people can bring down this regime. The future of Iran will not be determined by bombs and foreign powers, but by the solidarity and will of the Iranian people. Only by forming a widespread and popular movement that represents the true demands of society can we move from the calamity of the Islamic Republic and its overthrow to achieving democracy and social justice.
