Your Excellency,
The Left Party of Iran wishes to express its sincere appreciation for the responsible and principled position taken by you and the Government of Spain in defence of international law and in opposition to the escalation of war following the military attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran.
At a time when there is a serious risk that military confrontation could spread across the Middle East and beyond, your emphasis on the urgent need to halt the war and establish an immediate ceasefire reflects Spain’s constructive role in safeguarding international peace and stability. From the standpoint of international law, these attacks occurred in the absence of any immediate threat to the United States or Israel. They therefore cannot be justified under the principles of legitimate self-defence or preventive action under international law. In such circumstances, defending the fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations and opposing their violation is essential to safeguarding the international legal order.
The Left Party of Iran has consistently condemned the widespread violations of human rights in Iran. Even before these attacks, the Islamic Republic had brutally suppressed and killed thousands of its own citizens, including women and children. Nevertheless, such crimes cannot serve as a pretext for legitimizing aggressive foreign military action.
While we welcome your support, and that of other governments, for the struggles of the Iranian people, we believe that confronting the Islamic Republic and ending its authoritarian rule is the responsibility of the people of Iran and the country’s democratic forces. Historical experience has shown that foreign military interventions rarely lead to democracy and freedom, and instead often bring instability, destruction of social institutions, and greater suffering for the people.
At this critical moment, a firm defence of international law and a responsible response to unilateral military actions are more important than ever. Your commitment to these principles and your efforts to prevent further humanitarian and political tragedies deserve respect and recognition.
We hope that the responsible international-law-based approach of the Government of Spain will inspire other governments and international institutions to prioritize diplomacy, the rule of law, and peace, thereby helping to prevent the expansion of war and further suffering in the region.
