On Thursday, November 21, 2024, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas leader Mohammad Zeif. The court's prosecutor had requested such a warrant last May. The prosecutor's reason for this was the accusation of "war crimes" and "crimes against humanity" in the Gaza war in the case of Netanyahu and Gallant, and of Mohammad Zeif's participation in organizing the Hamas extremist group's operations against Israeli citizens and the killing and massacre of hundreds of civilians. The Hague Court of Justice began proceedings in this case with the official complaint of the South African government against the Israeli army and its leaders, after the war in Gaza began and tens of thousands of Palestinians were killed and massacred. Six months ago, the prosecutor requested the issuance of arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu, Yoav Galant, and Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh, and Yahya Sinwar. However, in the meantime, Haniyeh and Sinwar have been assassinated by Israel.
This day will remain a momentous day in the history of world litigation and the struggle for human rights. The importance of issuing this ruling is that the governments and individuals who have supported the accused of war crimes by sending weapons or by providing political support, who have squeezed their bloody hands and who have assisted them in these massacres, know that they are responsible for these crimes. The issuance of this ruling, in conditions where the Israeli lobbies in many countries have taken every measure to silence the massacre of the people of Gaza, further exposes the dimensions of the brutality against women, children, and civilians, and exposes public opinion even more than before, against the powers that turn a blind eye to such crimes.
The Left Party of Iran welcomes the issuance of the arrest warrant for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Zeif by the International Court of Justice in The Hague. With this warrant, all 123 countries that have ratified this court can arrest them on their soil and hand them over to the international court. Although the implementation of this warrant is complicated and difficult, the issuance of this warrant itself is a great victory for all the people of the world and progressive movements. Also, the issuance of this warrant itself expresses the impact of the pressure of progressive political parties, democratic institutions, and public opinion of the world's people to stop the war and punish those accused of crimes in any situation and anywhere in the world. Turning a blind eye to crimes and killings in Gaza and other parts of the world, under the guise of self-defense or any other justification, is unacceptable and condemnable, and the criminals must know that they will be held accountable for their actions. We congratulate all the forces that fight for peace and improving the living conditions of people and human rights defenders on issuing these sentences, and we hope that one day we will also witness the issuance of sentences to prosecute and arrest the perpetrators of the killing of young people and political prisoners in our country.
