Request to Stop the Killing and Execution of Protestors in Iran
January 9, 2023
Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs,
You are aware that on the morning of Saturday, January 7, two more youths arrested in the recent protests of the Iranian people, named Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini, were executed by the order of the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Four weeks earlier, on December 8 and 12, 2022, Mohsen Shekari and Majid Reza Rahnavard were executed. In addition, the death sentence has been issued for a number of other arrested people, some of which have been approved by the Supreme Judicial Court of the country and are enforceable, and the rest will be executed if approved by the said court. The Islamic Republic has killed more than five hundred people and arrested 20,000 people. Sixty-nine of the dead are children.
We are aware of the positions of different countries regarding the people's movement that has been going on in our country for more than three months under the slogan "Women, Life, Freedom". We are also aware that the death penalty is recognized in the criminal laws of some countries. In our opinion, with any assessment of the current movement in Iran and with any stance towards the death penalty, the necessity of preventing the killing of people and ensuring a fair trial process for those arrested does not negate it, but emphasizes it based on the Universal Charter of Human Rights.
Excellency
The judgments issued in the courts of the Islamic Republic, from the hearing to the execution, are absolutely not based on the requirements of a fair trial process. In most cases, the most basic rights of the defendants are denied to them. Torture is a common means of extracting "confessions" from the accused in interrogations and denying the accused an optional defense lawyer is the dominant reality of the interrogations. Undoubtedly, such rulings will not be issued in a fair judicial process.
Excellency,
With the understanding of your country's relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, we request you to take appropriate measures to prevent the suppression of the people and the execution of protesting Iranian youth by the Islamic Republic.
With respect and wishing you success and happiness for the people of your country and the people of Iran.
