The announcement of Javad Rouhi's "death" in prison is a clear example of the deprivation of security from the people of Iran under the rule of the Islamic Republic, arbitrary arrests, and the torture and killing of protesters. Thousands of young protestors who were arrested during the revolutionary movement "Women, Life, Freedom" are still in prison. Each of them can have a similar fate.
Javad Rouhi was arrested during nationwide protests against the Islamic Republic in 2022. He was severely tortured in prison. With whips and electric shocks and other inhuman assaults, they forced him to confess to crimes he did not commit. He was sentenced to three times death in the courts of the Islamic Republic. However, his death sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The case-making process was so unjustified that the Supreme Court of the regime's judicial system refused to approve it.
On the eve of the first anniversary of the murder of Mahsa-Zhina-Amini and the beginning of this movement, the regime's repression apparatus with widespread arrests of women's movement activists, families of the victims of this movement, journalists, civil activists, social movement activists including workers, teachers, students, etc., is trying to prevent any public outburst in this anniversary. "Death" in prison can also be among these desperate maneuvers. By massively expelling committed university professors and suspending, threatening and arresting militant students, the regime is also trying to shut down one of the bastions of defense of the revolutionary movement of the people. But none of these measures will be able to reverse the step taken by the revolutionary movement to take down the Islamic Republic.
Expressing sympathy with the family of Javad Rouhi and other bereaved families of the political murders of the Islamic Republic in prison, the Left Party of Iran calls on all the fighters for freedom and social justice, human rights defenders and the United Nations Fact-Finding Committee to confront the continuation of killings in prisons. The lives of political prisoners in the Islamic Republic are always in danger. On the 35th anniversary of the killing of thousands of political prisoners in 1988, the Islamic Republic should be forced to stop the killings in prisons. We are asking for a broader effort by political, cultural and civil forces for the immediate release of all political prisoners. Delay in this effort will put more lives at risk of "death".
Let us unite for the release of political prisoners!
