1. While the majority of people participating were Iranian, there was a noticeable presence of non-Iranians showing solidarity. This included a local trade union organisation. Amongst the banners, there was one from an Iranian & Afghan women’s organisation.
2. There was no one centre of the demonstration. Rather, there were several microphones of varying volumes. The loudest was on a staircase that attracted the most attention. The slogans raised there were all generic, without any particular organisational or ideological focus.
3. As the photos show, there were probably several thousand people present. My impression was that, overwhelmingly, they were against the regime without a clear political/organisational affiliation.
Today was a day of trade union strikes, protest and rallies across the UK in support of workers’ rights, climate and social justice. The main rally was addressed by the head of the RMT Union, who has become the voice of organised labour in the UK. His first point was to express solidarity with the women of Iran.
