Feminine revolution in Iran

Feminine revolution in Iran
Roza Rozbehan's statement at the Sachsen State Congress DIE LINKE

Dear Comrades,

My name is Roza Roozbehan and I am a member of Central committee of LPI (PF).
Since 1979, Iranian women’s struggle against forced ‘hijab’, discrimination at workplaces, the lack of equal opportunities for employment, the anti-women’s sharia laws, and many other discriminatory measures has continued. The feminist movements, however, have not been widespread due to the lack of support from men and the society.

On September 16, 2022, a young Iranian Kurdish woman named ‘Mahsa Amini’ died in hospital under suspicious circumstances after being arrested by the so called “Morality Police” two days ago for not wearing “proper hijab”. She was transferred to a hospital few hours after her arrest, with signs of a cerebral hemorrhage. Ms. Amini’s murder resulted in the most widespread and the longest protests in the past four decades. The response of the security forces, as usual, was and has been to suppress protesters by any means. To this day, at least 266 people, including 39 children, have lost their lives, thousands have been injured, and tens of thousands of protesters have been arrested. There are many more whose names have not been submitted anywhere for fear of retribution by the government.

What is happening on the streets of more than 100’s cities of Iran is truly a feminine revolution. While men do participate in the protests but the courageous Iranian women not only are present in greater numbers than men, but also, they lead the protests. Women have united the people of Iran and abroad under the ‘Woman, Life’ Freedom’ slogan and, rightfully, they believe without woman’s right there is no human rights. Iranian women are not fighting just for their rights. They also fight against poverty, for climate crisis, ethnic and religious minorities’ rights and all forms of discrimination. This slogan has now become an international slogan. Recently, the American philosopher, Michael Hart, suggested this slogan should be put in the context of the French revolution’s slogan of ‘Freedom, Equality, Fraternity’ to add the feminine aspect of human rights.

Dear friends,
Today, the streets of Iran, is the battleground and the center of feminism movements of the world. We are fighting for the rights of all women around the world, including the citizens of the European Union countries. This is an international struggle and as such, it requires international support. Please be the voice of Iranian people and do anything possible to force your governments to recognize our movement and support the brave men and women of Iran. Tomorrow is too late. Please do whatever you can to stop the Islamic Republic of Iran to murder its own people. Please demand the immediate release of political, women and human rights, environmental crisis and ethnic and religious minority prisoners.

The Iranian feminist revolution will succeed eventually but you can help the people of Iran to achieve their goals faster and with less causality.

Thank you for listening and on behalf of my party I wish you a successful congress.
