Letter from 250 Iranians to the Secretary-General of the United Nations regarding the tragedy of the “War in Gaza”

Letter from 250 Iranians to the Secretary-General of the United Nations regarding the tragedy of the “War in Gaza”
Honorable Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. António Guterres,

With greetings and appreciation for your tireless efforts and those of your colleagues to extinguish the flames of war in Gaza, it is sadly necessary to note that the tragedy of the indiscriminate killing of innocent Palestinian children and women continues unabated after three months. The global admiration for your valuable efforts, such as an immediate ceasefire and the rescue of victims from this ruthless massacre, amid displacement, hunger, and homelessness, has provided us with more motivation in these early days of the new year.

The continuation of war and massacre in Gaza, the daily repetition of all kinds of crimes amid this human tragedy, and the loss of lives on both sides depict a scene of war crimes. It is also practically a genocide carried out by Israel. The Security Council's meetings for a ceasefire and halting this war have been fruitless due to the U.S. government's opposition, allowing the Israeli government to commit shocking atrocities. Suppose the Holocaust became a stain on humanity by incinerating the lives of millions of Jews in crematorium ovens. In that case, this ongoing slaughter is nothing but another addition to the disgrace of humanity.

We, a group of Iranians, condemn the inhumane behavior of Hamas on October 7 towards non-military Israeli citizens and the massacre of Palestinians in Gaza and along the western bank of the Jordan River by the Israeli government. We express our opposition to the U.S. government's actions towards Netanyahu's government and reject the policies and approach of the Islamic Republic in supporting the war between the two nations of Israel and Palestine, adding fuel to this conflict.

We call for intensified and responsible efforts by the United Nations to achieve an immediate and sustainable ceasefire and the freedom of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners. In our belief, a more serious utilization of humanity for active intervention in this longstanding crisis and efforts to resolve it based on the United Nations resolutions and the Oslo Accords can strengthen the position of forces committed to the necessity of peaceful coexistence and provide the possibility of avoiding war and massacre. In this regard, we consider the formation of a truth-finding committee to investigate instances of war crimes in the Gaza tragedy and the preparation for international legal arbitration of the extremist actions of Tel Aviv and Hamas as essential steps toward lasting peace.

With the hope for the United Nations' success in promptly ending the war and smoothing the path to achieving sustainable peace, we express our gratitude in advance for your attention.

Please accept the assurances of our highest regards,

January 7, 2024
