His Excellency Mr. Martin Chungong
Secretary General
Inter-Parliamentary Union
Dear Mr. Secretary General,
You are aware that for more than two months now, a popular movement has been going on in Iran with the slogan "Women, Life, Freedom". This movement was started in protest against the policy of suppressing the civil and citizenship liberties of the people, and as it can be seen from its slogan, it peacefully wants to end all the restrictions and coercions imposed by the Islamic Republic on the society of Iran, especially women as half of society, dissidents, believers in other religions, ethnic, gender and ideological minorities. The starting point of these protests were the events that led to the arrest and murder of Mahsa Amini in the detention center of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The policy of the Iranian regime has been to suppress the protesters by using all means, including shooting at the protesters. In these two months, according to human rights organizations, 339 people have died, fifty-two of whom are children, and more than 15,000 people have been arrested. The killings in Baluchistan were very widespread and only in one case in Zahedan, about one hundred people were killed by the regime’s suppressive forces.
Unfortunately, in such circumstances, 227 out of 290 members of the regime’s parliament, by signing a letter to the head of the regime’s judiciary, demanded the most severe punishment, i.e., execution, for the recently arrested and strict action in the case of protesters in Baluchistan and encouraged more killings.
We call on you to take every possible measures to prevent the imminent executions that threaten the lives of the arrested and to emphasize to the Islamic parliament and its representatives regarding this dangerous proposal and its withdrawal.
With respect,
Roza Roozbehan - Mehdi Ebrahimzadeh
