The research at Sharif University of Technology says that the level of Lake Urmia on 3 June 2023 was the lowest level recorded since 1964 and reached its lowest on this day of 2023 and in the last 60 years.
This research shows the extremely critical conditions of the largest inland lake in Iran and one of the 25 largest lakes in the world. This incident means the aggravation of the environmental crisis and the formation of a social crisis in the near future in Iran, especially in the northwestern region of the country. The condition of Lake Urmia clearly shows the disregard for sustainable development.
In all these years, with the construction of a road in the middle of Lake Urmia, the excessive expansion of agriculture in the region, extensive dam construction in the upper reaches of the lake, Uncontrolled extraction of underground waters and the construction of wells, climate change, and most importantly, the non-expert measures and decisions of the government regarding the improvement of the condition of Lake Urmia we are witnessing the gradual deterioration of this lake along with the false claims of the restoration of the lake.
Water right of Lake Urmia was determined to be 3 billion and 426 million cubic meters but, it is used for large agricultural projects affiliated with government institutions and this amount of water does not flow into the lake. The government and its executive authorities do not believe in the recovery of Lake Urmia and do not pay attention to the warnings of experts and there is not a clear report on the budget that was intended for this purpose and the expenses that were made for the project.
In support of the assessments by the environment experts, The Coalition for the Secular Democratic Republic of Iran, warns against the drying up of Lake Urmia and demands immediate measures to prevent the lake from drying up completely.
